The Russmart Solar HID Light Manager controls any ballast-based, gaseous discharge lighting system. Its flexible design allows The Russmart Solar HID Light Manager to interface with any dedicated lighting circuit of 120, 277, 240, or 480 volts in capacities of 10 to 100 amperes single phase or 10 to 150 amperes three phase. One unit can reduce the energy consumption of one, ten, 100 or even 400 lighting fixtures and the savings can be measured within 20 minutes after the lights turn on!

Actual energy field savings measurement have ranged from 15% to 40% depending on power distribution conditions, fixture types, age of lighting systems and operating conditions. The unit can be metered at the source and creates no harmonics.

The Russmart Solar HID Light Manager works in conjunction with other energy savings devices such as high efficiency lamps, photoelectric switches, and other energy management systems. Down-line switching capability is also an available option. Additionally, running the lamps at a lower wattage will reduce the operating temperature, this prolonging the life of the lamps and the ballasts by up to 40%.

The best kept secret in the industry is that HID lamps require less power to burn than to start. The Russmart Solar HID Light Manager takes advantage of this fact by allowing full power to be supplied only when the lights are first turned on, then reducing the amount of electricity that flows from a lighting panel to individual lamps. When the lamp is first switched on, it is ignited and stabilized at full voltage. It needs all of the power it is rated for to start. After a pre-determined "warming-up" period of ten to fifteen minutes, the voltage is then reduced. The lamp will continue to emanate light at this lower voltage, thus saving energy and money with no predictable loss of light.

As the world phases out incandescent lights, new more efficient light sources are gaining popularity, and as such, the need for controlling these devices is becoming increasingly critical. For the past decade, dimming fluorescent light sources has been a challenging task because the ideal device would control the light level to provide comfort for residential and office environments, while at the same time, enabling energy savings especially in commercial installations.

A number of manufacturers offer solutions to this problem; however, all have common deficiencies: high initial costs, extensive changes in existing installations, or the inability to control all the various types of light sources.

Russmart Solar offers a solution to these problems using patented technology for controlling all Compact Fluorescent Lights (non-dimmable and dimmable) and Fluorescent Linear Tubes (T12, T8, T5, circular) with non-dimmable ballasts. The device has also proven suitable for controlling neon, cold cathode, halogen, and incandescent lights. Because of it unique ability to control such various sources, it is also currently under test for other control functions such as improved fan speed control.

This Universal Control Device (UCD) represents a true breakthrough in technology. Installation is made simple since it is a direct replacement of the existing wall switch. Also initial adjustment for size of the light load and dimming can be preset to the customer’s preference.

The first model has been designed UCD-01 for a single phase 120V / 60Hz, 300W load. The unit meets safety standards for Solid-State Dimming Controls, ANSI/UL 1472 First Edition, and CSA-C22.2 No. 184-96 and started pre-production in April 2008.

Designs for higher power models (277V / 60Hz, 3 phase - 1200W load) are in progress with an anticipated release to market date of September 2008.

Additional features of future models will be improved controls including light harvesting remote control, motion and/or infrared sensors, and touch screen displays.
